One area that we particularly love exploring is Chancery Lane, which is located close to Holborn and our Hatton Garden Hotel. Keep reading as we discover the history of Chancery Lane and the Royal Courts to help you appreciate this area even more during your next visit.

The History of Chancery Lane

The history of Chancery Lane can be traced back hundreds of years. It is often associated with the legal profession, which you can still see signs of to this day. With many legal firms, consulting firms, and related businesses, it’s one of the best places for individuals and businesses to go if they need support. The street received its name from the High Court of Chancery, which can be traced back to the 1100s. Once known as New Street, the area was renamed in 1377 by King Edward II. Two of the most prominent buildings on the street include The Royal Courts of Justice and the Inns of Court.

The Royal Courts of Justice

Sometimes referred to as the Law Courts, the Royal Courts of Justice is a court building located near Chancery Lane. It is home to the High Court and the Court of Appeal of England and Wales. It is one of the most stunning buildings in the area and is a Grade I listed building. As one of the largest courts in Europe, it is close to the Strand and the City of London. It was originally designed by George Edmund Street, who unfortunately passed away before he could see the completion of this magnificent building. The Victorian Gothic Revival Style is prominent throughout the design and makes the building somewhere we recommend anyone passes by when staying in the area.
