Autumn/ Winter 2019 in London: Our top picks of London’s Theatre Scene

September is here; the first leaves are browning and we are looking to spend our evenings indoors rather than on a rooftop cinema.

Fame The Musical, The Peacock Theatre

Fame is returning to the Peacock Theatre for its 30th anniversary tour. The show centres on students at the New York’s High School For The Performing Arts and how they tackle the highs and lows of life as a performer.

Big The Musical, The Dominion Theatre

Based on the 1988 film starring Tom Hanks, Big The Musical tells the tale of Josh Baskin. Aged 12, Josh wishes on a Zoltar Speaks machine to grow up and his wish is granted overnight. With the help of his friend Billy, he must navigate his new adult life whilst trying to find another machine to take him back!

Solaris, The Lyric Hammersmith

After being adapted for the big screen and starring George Clooney, Stainslaw Lem’s novel is now being adapted for the stage for the first time. 

Within hours of arriving at a space station orbiting Solaris, Kris is troubled by the behaviour of her fellow scientists who seem to be haunted by ghosts. As she meets the ghost of an old flame, she too becomes addicted to the interactions. Are they real? Or is the planet communicating?

Mamma Mia! The Party, The O2

Tickets to ‘The Party’ take on Mamma Mia include a 4 course meal, an immersive theatre performance and the chance to stay behind and dance the night away to Abba after the show – definitely one if you have been missing your Abba fix lately!

Six The Musical, The Arts Theatre

‘Divorced, Beheaded, Died, Divorced, Beheaded, Alive’ – the famous quote about King Henry VIII’s wives. Six is a modern day take on the lives of King Henry’s Queens –

part history lesson and part girl power session, Londoners are in love!

Fiddler on the Roof, Playhouse Theatre

Winning nine Tony awards when it was first performed, and winning many more awards and nominations, in its subsequent revivals, 2019 brings another revival back to London. This classic is a must see for all theatre lovers!

Based in Imperial Russia, Fiddler on the Roof centres on Tevye and his family struggles. As the father of five daughters and of the Jewish faith, he attempts to maintain his religious and cultural traditions against the Tsar’s edict evicting Jews and his daughters’ wishes to marry for love.

The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole aged 13 and Three Quarters. The Ambassador Theatre

Based on the timeless tale, this stage adaptation follows the life of a socially awkward Adrian as he fumbles his way through life. Covering unrequited love, family life, homework and everything in between, this will definitely take you back to your younger days!

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, Bridge Theatre

Head through the cupboard and into Narnia with the family this Christmas and say hello to Faun, a talking lion and the coldest White Witch there ever was.

With the same director team as the record show at the Leeds Playhouse in 2017, this version of Narnia is not to be missed!

The Ocean at the End of the Lane, National Theatre

Looking for a more unusual Christmas show for you and the family? This might be the one for you. 

Adapted from Neil Gaiman’s fantasy novel, The Ocean at the End of the Lane takes Alex back to his 13th birthday when he returns to his childhood home for a visit. He stands at the edge of the pond (or is it an ocean?) and is taken to a world where he battles malign spirits and travels the ocean with his best friend Lettie.
