Fragile Beauty: Photographs from the Sir Elton John and David Furnish Collection
The Victoria and Albert Museum will host this much-anticipated exhibition from 18th May, 2024 to 5th January, 2025. With support from Gucci, this event will offer attendees the rare chance to take a look into Sir Elton John and David Furnish’s private photography collection. Over 300 prints will be on display, taken by photographers including Robert Mapplethorpe, William Eggleston and Cindy Sherman. This is a culmination of three decades of collecting these photographs and it’s one of the highlights of a visit to the museum this year.
Art Without Heroes
Head over to the William Morris Gallery before 23rd September to see this celebration of Mingei, which is a Japanese folk-craft movement from the 1920s and 1930s. It’s the largest exhibition the UK has seen featuring this style. The term Mingei was first used by philosopher Yanagi Soetsu and means ‘the art of the people’. In this exhibition you’ll find ceramics, paper, woodwork and toys from both public and private collections. Whether you are familiar with this art movement or not, you’ll find it’s a worthwhile way to spend a couple of hours this summer in London.
Expressionists: Kandinsky, Münter and The Blue Rider
The Tate Modern will be home to Expressionists: Kandinsky, Münter and The Blue Rider until 20th October. This exhibition strives to tell the story of this group of friends and collaborators who worked together in the early 20th century. At this show, you’ll find items from the Lenbachhaus in Munich and pieces by Franz Marc, Maria Franck-Marc and other artists who’ve not been displayed together for over 60 years.
Now You See Us: Women Artists in Britain 1520 – 1920
Tate Britain shines a light on women artists in Britain in this exhibition which runs until 13th October. Spanning over 400 years of work, it shows the journey of women in the industry and their struggles to become recognised as professionals. Over 200 different artists are featured in the show, including Angelica Kauffman and Gwen John, alongside up and coming artists.
All of these exhibitions are likely to be very popular this summer, so make sure you check online to book tickets if needed ahead of time. Our Great St Helen Hotel is the ideal base for any art lovers visiting London and allows easy access to all of the galleries and museums we’ve mentioned above.
